How Long to Study for the GMAT? A Realistic 8 Week Plan
Plan on six to twelve weeks. That is the honest answer to how long to study for the GMAT for most test takers. A structured 6 to 12 week window is enough time for meaningful gains, while large jumps, meaning 100 points or more on the GMAT Focus Edition scale, usually demand the longer end of that range and more protected hours each week. This guide starts with the numbers, then lays out a realistic 8 week plan, week by week, from diagnostic to test day.
How long does GMAT prep actually take?
The right window depends on three things: your starting score, your target score, and the hours you can protect each week. An 8 week plan at 12 to 15 hours a week comes to roughly 100 to 120 hours. For someone starting within striking distance of their target, that is enough time to repair weak skills, build pacing, and take full-length practice tests with proper review.
The extremes are where plans fail. A two week sprint leaves no time for review, and review is where scores actually move. An open-ended six month campaign fails differently: without a test date, sessions drift, material fades between them, and motivation erodes. A fixed window of 6 to 12 weeks with a booked test date beats both.
What are you actually preparing for?
The current exam is the GMAT Focus Edition. It has 64 questions across three sections: Quantitative Reasoning with 21 questions, Verbal Reasoning with 23, and Data Insights with 20. Each section runs 45 minutes, for 2 hours 15 minutes of testing plus one optional 10 minute break. Each section is scored 60 to 90 and weighted equally, and the total runs 205 to 805 (mba.com, GMAC, 2026). You choose your section order, and within each section you can bookmark and change up to 3 answers (mba.com, GMAC, 2026).
Compared with the Classic exam, the syllabus is leaner: no essay, no Sentence Correction, no geometry. Data Insights, the section built from Integrated Reasoning content and Data Sufficiency, counts fully in the total score (mba.com, GMAC, 2026). The planning consequence is simple: three equally weighted sections deserve roughly equal attention. A plan that treats Data Insights as an afterthought is planning for the old exam.
The 8 week plan, week by week
The plan below assumes 12 to 15 hours a week. It opens with a diagnostic, works through one skill block at a time, holds a daily review cadence throughout, includes two practice-test weeks, and ends with a taper.

Two habits carry this plan. The first is the error log: every missed question gets a line recording the skill, the trap, and the fix. The second is the daily review cadence: 10 to 15 minutes reworking older misses before any new material. Skip either one and an 8 week plan quietly becomes an 8 week tour.
Why does cramming fail?
Cramming feels productive because massed practice creates short-term fluency. Spend one long evening on a single skill and, by the end of it, answers seem to arrive on their own. That ease is misleading. The method is only warm in working memory from constant use, and once a few days pass without it, little of the evening survives.
Spacing works in the opposite direction. Returning to a skill after a gap forces effortful retrieval, and effortful retrieval is what strengthens memory. The same total hours produce more durable learning spread across weeks than packed into days. The GMAT punishes cramming for a second reason: breadth. Its 64 questions sample dozens of distinct skills across three sections, and a short window allows only one or two passes over each. Skills touched once decay before test day. Skills revisited on a schedule hold.
When should you choose 12 weeks instead?
Eight weeks is a default, not a rule. Choose a 12 week window in any of these cases:
- A large score gap. If your diagnostic sits 100 or more points below your target on the Focus Edition scale, you need more total hours than 8 weeks comfortably holds. Targets at selective programs run high: Harvard Business School reports a median GMAT Focus Edition score of 685 (HBS Class of 2027 profile, 2025), and MIT Sloan reports a median GMAT Focus of 675 (MIT Sloan Class of 2027 profile, 2025).

- A long break from math. If you have not touched algebra in years, budget 2 to 4 extra weeks of foundations before the skill blocks begin in earnest.
- A retake after a plateau. Repeating the same 8 weeks tends to repeat the same score. A longer window with a changed method, more review and fewer new problems, gives a plateau room to break.
The one thing not to do is extend the window without a reason. More weeks on the same weak cadence add fatigue, not points.

Six to twelve structured weeks covers most test takers. Eight weeks at 12 to 15 hours a week is the sensible default when your diagnostic lands near your target. Twelve weeks is the better call when the gap is large, the hours are scarce, or the math is rusty. Whichever window you choose, book the test date first, protect the daily review cadence, and treat the two practice tests as study material rather than verdicts.
